Indian Ranks Highest Among G20 Nations in Climate Change Performance Index

India is one of the leading countries in terms of climate change performance, ranking highest among the G20 nations in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI). The CCPI is an annual ranking of the world’s most populous countries and is based on their performance in terms of reducing their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, increasing the share of renewable energy in their energy mix, and having in place adequate policies and measures to address climate change.

India’s success is largely due to the ambitious goals set through its National Action Plan on Climate Change, which included eight ambitious programmes to promote sustainable development and combat climate change. These included the National Solar Mission, the National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency, the National Mission on Sustainable Habitat and the National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem.

The country has also seen a significant increase in the share of renewable energy in its energy mix. India has set an ambitious target of installing 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, and is likely to exceed this target. India is also investing heavily in energy storage, smart grids, and electric vehicles, setting the stage for a future based on clean energy.

The government’s efforts are also paying dividends in terms of reducing India’s CO2 emissions. The country has pledged to reduce its emissions intensity by 33-35% compared to 2005 levels by 2030. It has also committed to a 40% share of non-fossil fuel energy sources by 2030.

India’s success in the CCPI is encouraging, as it shows that the country is making progress in its fight against climate change. With the right policy framework and investments, India can continue to make strides in this regard, and set an example for other countries to follow.
