When we talk about combating climate change, the conversation almost always centers on massive infrastructure projects, high-tech renewable energy grids, electric vehicles, and ambitious government policies. While these supply-side advances are essential, they address only half of the puzzle.

Globally, roughly 72% of greenhouse gas emissions are linked to household-level choices, from how we handle kitchen waste and travel daily to how we power our homes. As researcher Amita Basu highlights in an insightful study published in The Wire, even the most advanced green technologies and supportive policies will fall short if everyday citizens do not adopt them.

To bridge the gap between setting climate targets and actually achieving them, we must look through the lens of behavioural science.

The Supply vs. Demand Disconnect

In recent years, India’s green supply side has accelerated rapidly. Electric two-wheelers are mainstreaming, subsidies for rooftop solar exist, and municipal waste collection systems are expanding. Yet, actual adoption on the consumer side remains surprisingly slow.

Why do households hesitate to segregate waste at source, compost wet waste, or switch to energy-efficient appliances?

As Basu notes in The Wire, climate strategy has long suffered from a demand-side blind spot. Building infrastructure creates opportunity, but understanding human psychology determines action.

Decoding Choices: The Behavioural Diagnostics Framework

To understand why people choose or resist low-carbon habits, behavioural researchers propose a behavioural diagnostics approach. This framework categorizes the factors influencing individual choices into two primary forces across supply and demand:

1. Enabling Factors (The Drivers)

  • Supply-Side: Reliable solar vendors, low upfront installation costs, accessible subsidies, well-connected public transit, and walkable footpaths.

  • Demand-Side: Strong environmental values, lived experience of extreme weather, a sense of personal agency, community pride, and word-of-mouth recommendations from satisfied neighbors.

2. Blocking Factors (The Barriers)

  • Supply-Side: Unclear or shifting government policies, lack of battery-backed solar subsidies, and poorly designed public transit routes.

  • Demand-Side: Culturally ingrained reluctance to handle waste, “climate doomerism” or cynicism, a heavy focus on short-term costs, and widespread perception that environmental action is solely the government’s responsibility.

On-the-Ground Lessons Across India

Field research conducted across diverse Indian regions—including Panjim (Goa), Kolhapur (Maharashtra), Kuppam (Andhra Pradesh), Jaipur and Udaipur (Rajasthan), and Almora (Uttarakhand)—reveals how local context shapes daily choices:

  • Making Waste Lifecycles Transparent: Most urban households don’t comply with waste segregation because the lifecycle of garbage is completely opaque. When communities learn that segregated kitchen waste directly becomes biogas or compost—while unsegregated waste poisons local air, soil, and groundwater—compliance increases dramatically.

  • Solving Practical Bottlenecks: In high-rainfall regions like coastal Goa or Maharashtra, dry waste collected during the monsoons often develops mould, ruining its recycling value. Behavioural solutions involved working with residential housing societies to set up dry, elevated storage spaces for weekly collection.

  • Reframing Norms Through Engagement: Replacing technical jargon with illustrated visual guides, community presentations, and interactive games successfully reframed waste segregation as simple, normal, and socially rewarding.

What This Means for Responsible Living

Whether at home or while traveling through eco-sensitive destinations, meaningful sustainability isn’t just about waiting for better systems—it’s about understanding our own habits and choices.

  1. Focus on the High-Impact Daily Habits: Small, repeatable actions like source-segregating waste, choosing public transit, and reducing single-use materials compound into massive systemic shifts.

  2. Make the Invisible Visible: Seek to understand where your waste goes and where your energy comes from. Awareness directly dismantles apathy.

  3. Normalize Green Choices: Positive word-of-mouth from peers is one of the strongest drivers of adoption. Share practical tips with neighbors, family, and fellow travelers rather than focusing purely on climate doom.

By combining smart policy and technology with deep behavioural insights, we can turn climate intentions into lasting daily habits.
