1. Mode of travel

Be thoughtful about your mode of travel. If there are any environment-friendly ways to reach your destination, opt that! For example, you can travel via public transport for shorter distance places. You can opt for direct flights or choose more energy-efficient aircraft.

2. Follow the rules of the destination

You know, some places prioritize sustainability and invest in preserving their natural and cultural heritage. Like Bhutan,
as Bhutan is the world’s first carbon negative country that has environment protection written into their constitution and have a set of rules to be followed. So, before you travel, just read and research a bit about the basic rules for travellers and follow them strictly.

3. Where are you staying?

Best way to travel responsibly is either staying an eco-friendly or eco-conscious hotel or resort, or stay in a local homestay run by a local family. Look for accommodation options that use renewable energy or have an effective waste management system or even take small steps towards the betterment of the environment.

4. Support the local communities

Not just by staying at a homestay or PG, but you can also buy souvenirs, handicrafts or handmade products for local shops. This will help the local communities to sustain and eventually help in flouring the place itself.

5. Don’t buy anything and everything

Yes, you need to be conscious about things you buy from the place. Tempted by a beautifully carved ivory tusk? or a maybe black coral bracelet? DO NOT BUY! Just because a particular item is for sale doesn’t mean it’s legal to purchase. Do not buy things that are illegal or made by hunting animals or rare natural items. Ask if it is legal or not and then only buy.

6. Avoid using one-time plastic

We swear by this one! AVOID USING ONE-TIME PLASTIC ITEMS. For example, polythenes, plastic water pouches, plastic straws etc. Do not use it.

7. Carry your own water bottle

Every place has water coolers or filters installed. Just carry your own water bottle and re-fill it. This will help you avoid using one-time use and throw water bottles or pouches.

8. Look, don’t tease

Wildlife is dangerous. Remember you are the guest in someone’s territory. No matter how brave or trained you are, do not tease any animal or specie.

9. What products are you using?

We often forget this point. You need to pick the products you use very thoughtfully. Not suitable for every scenario but yes it is important. Suppose you are going to take a dip in some natural waterfall or lake, in that case, it will be better if you use reef-friendly, mineral-based or biodegradable products that doesn’t harm the water and species living in it. The chemicals on your skin can cause harm, so be sure to pick your products consciously.
