How to reach Kedarnath from Mumbai

Planning a spiritual trip to Kedarnath from Mumbai? The journey may look long on the map, but with the right route, it can be quite manageable. Kedarnath is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in India, surrounded by the breathtaking Himalayan landscape.

Since there is no direct road or railway connection to Kedarnath, you need to combine flight or train + road journey + trek/helicopter to reach the temple.

Here is a simple guide on how to reach Kedarnath from Mumbai.

Mumbai To Kedarnath By Flight

The quickest option is to fly from Mumbai to Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport.

From Dehradun, you can continue your journey by road towards Sonprayag. The route generally passes through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag and Guptkashi before reaching Sonprayag.

The journey looks like this:

Mumbai → Dehradun → Rishikesh → Guptkashi → Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Kedarnath

You can hire a private cab, take a shared vehicle or look for an organised Kedarnath tour package from Dehradun.

Flying is generally the best choice if you have limited time.

Mumbai To Kedarnath By Train

There is no railway station in Kedarnath. The nearest major railhead for the pilgrimage route is Rishikesh, while Haridwar is also commonly used by pilgrims travelling towards the Char Dham region.

You can take a train from Mumbai towards Haridwar or Rishikesh and then continue by road.

The approximate route is:

Mumbai → Haridwar/Rishikesh → Guptkashi → Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Kedarnath

This option takes longer than flying but can be useful if you want to save on airfare or enjoy a slower journey through North India.

How To Reach Sonprayag

Whether you fly or take a train, the important point is that you eventually have to reach Sonprayag.

Sonprayag is one of the key bases for the Kedarnath pilgrimage. From here, local transportation takes pilgrims towards Gaurikund, depending on the current operational arrangements.

The road journey through the mountains is itself an experience. You will pass through valleys, rivers, mountain villages and some spectacular Himalayan landscapes.

Gaurikund To Kedarnath

The road journey ends at Gaurikund.

From here, you have to reach Kedarnath by one of the available options:

  • Trek
  • Pony or horse
  • Palki
  • Helicopter from designated helipads

The traditional and most popular option is trekking.

The Kedarnath trek is roughly 14 to 16 km, depending on the route and current route conditions. It can be physically demanding because of the altitude and steep sections.

If you are not comfortable with a long mountain trek, you can consider a helicopter service or other available assisted options.

Kedarnath Helicopter Option

If you want to avoid the long trek, helicopter services are available from places such as Phata, Sirsi and Guptkashi, subject to weather, government regulations and availability.

This can significantly reduce the physical effort involved in reaching the temple.

However, helicopter tickets can sell out quickly during peak pilgrimage season, so book through authorised channels and check the latest government guidelines before planning your journey.

Best Route From Mumbai

For most travellers, the most convenient route is:

Mumbai → Dehradun by flight → Rishikesh → Guptkashi/Sitapur → Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Kedarnath

If you have more time, you can travel by train:

Mumbai → Haridwar/Rishikesh → Guptkashi → Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Kedarnath

The flight option saves considerable travel time, while the train option can be more economical depending on your dates and bookings.

How Many Days Do You Need?

Ideally, keep at least 5 to 6 days for a Mumbai to Kedarnath trip.

A comfortable itinerary could look like this:

Day 1: Mumbai to Dehradun, then travel towards Rishikesh
Day 2: Rishikesh to Guptkashi/Sitapur
Day 3: Travel to Sonprayag, then Gaurikund and trek towards Kedarnath
Day 4: Kedarnath darshan and return towards Sonprayag
Day 5: Sonprayag to Rishikesh/Dehradun
Day 6: Return to Mumbai

If you are taking a helicopter, the itinerary can potentially be shorter, depending on the service and accommodation arrangements.

Best Time To Visit Kedarnath

Kedarnath is a seasonal pilgrimage destination because of the extreme Himalayan weather.

The temple generally opens during the summer pilgrimage season and closes before winter. Exact opening and closing dates change every year, so always check the official Uttarakhand government information before booking flights, hotels or helicopter tickets.

Avoid planning your trip without checking current weather and route conditions. Mountain weather can change quickly.

Kedarnath Yatra Registration

Before travelling, make sure you complete the required Kedarnath/Char Dham Yatra registration through the official Uttarakhand system.

Keep your identification documents, registration details and booking confirmations accessible throughout the journey.

Also check whether any additional travel restrictions, medical requirements or route advisories are applicable for your travel dates.

What To Keep In Mind

Kedarnath is located at a high altitude, so do not treat the journey like a regular holiday.

Carry warm layers even if Mumbai is hot when you leave. Comfortable trekking shoes, rain protection, medicines you normally need, water and basic snacks can be useful.

Most importantly, avoid rushing the journey. Give yourself enough time to rest and acclimatise before the trek.

Knowing how to reach Kedarnath from Mumbai makes planning the pilgrimage much easier. The simplest option is to fly from Mumbai to Dehradun and continue by road towards Sonprayag and Gaurikund.

From Gaurikund, you can trek to Kedarnath or choose an authorised helicopter service if you prefer a more comfortable journey.

The road through the Himalayas, the mountain air and finally seeing the Kedarnath temple surrounded by snow-capped peaks make the long journey truly worthwhile. If you are planning your first Kedarnath Yatra, focus not just on reaching the destination but also on enjoying the journey along the way.
