Azerbaijan for First Timers: My Honest Experience

If Azerbaijan is on your travel bucket list, let me tell you something. This country has much more to offer than the famous Flame Towers and the beautiful streets of Baku. From colourful mountains and charming old towns to snow-covered landscapes and interesting local experiences, Azerbaijan surprised me in ways I did not expect.

I visited Azerbaijan in 2026, and as someone who loves travelling and exploring destinations beyond the usual tourist attractions, I wanted to experience the country beyond what we see on Instagram. So, if you are planning your first trip to Azerbaijan, here is my honest experience and everything I think you should know before you go.

Is Azerbaijan Worth Visiting for First-Time Travellers?

Honestly, yes, especially if you enjoy exploring destinations that offer a mix of modern city life, history, nature and adventure.

Baku, the capital, has a fascinating contrast between contemporary architecture and its historic Old City. You can spend the morning walking through centuries-old streets and the evening admiring the illuminated skyline along the Caspian Sea.

But what I personally loved was the opportunity to explore places outside Baku. Azerbaijan is not just a city-break destination. Its landscapes change dramatically as you travel towards the mountains and smaller towns.

Baku: A Mix of Modern Luxury and Old-World Charm

Baku is likely to be your first stop when visiting Azerbaijan, and it is a great place to begin your trip.

The city has wide boulevards, waterfront promenades, stylish cafes and impressive architecture. Flame Towers are among its most recognisable landmarks, while the Old City, also known as Icherisheher, offers a completely different atmosphere.

I would recommend exploring the Old City without rushing. Walk through its narrow lanes, discover local shops and stop to admire the historic buildings. You can also visit the area around the Maiden Tower and explore the city’s famous waterfront.

My suggestion is to keep some time free for simply wandering around. Not every travel experience needs to be planned around a checklist of attractions.

Beyond Baku: The Experiences That Made My Trip Special

One of my biggest recommendations for first-time visitors is to explore beyond the capital if your schedule allows.

Candy Cane Mountains

The Candy Cane Mountains are known for their unusual red, white and pink striped appearance. The landscape looks quite different from what most people associate with Azerbaijan, making it an interesting stop for photography and sightseeing.

The journey itself is part of the experience, so plan this excursion with enough time rather than trying to squeeze it into a packed day.

Quba

Quba offers a change of scenery from the busy streets of Baku. Known for its natural surroundings and mountain landscapes, it is a lovely addition to an Azerbaijan itinerary.

If you enjoy road trips and watching the landscape change along the way, consider including Quba in your plans.

Shahdag Mountain Resort

Shahdag was another memorable part of my Azerbaijan trip. Located in the Greater Caucasus region, the resort is known for mountain scenery and seasonal activities.

I tried the alpine coaster here, which cost me around 50 Azerbaijani manat at the time of my visit. Prices can change, so check the latest rates before planning your activities.

Even if you are not visiting during the main ski season, Shahdag can offer a different perspective on Azerbaijan, depending on the weather and available activities.

How Many Days Do You Need in Azerbaijan?

For a first visit, I would suggest around four to five days if you want to explore Baku and take a couple of excursions outside the city.

A possible itinerary could look like this:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Baku, explore the city centre and enjoy the waterfront.
  • Day 2: Visit the Old City, Flame Towers viewpoints and other major attractions.
  • Day 3: Take a day trip to Candy Cane Mountains and Quba.
  • Day 4: Explore Shahdag Mountain Resort and enjoy its scenic surroundings.
  • Day 5: Keep the day flexible for shopping, cafes, museums or departure.

Travel times can be significant on excursions, so avoid treating this itinerary as a fixed schedule. Depending on your interests, you may prefer to stay overnight in the mountains instead of returning to Baku.

Is Azerbaijan Expensive for Indian Travellers?

Azerbaijan can suit different budgets, but your overall expenses will depend on your travel dates, hotel category, transportation and activities.

Flights from India, accommodation in Baku, guided tours and restaurant choices will make up a significant portion of your budget. Booking flights early and comparing hotel options can help manage costs.

The local currency is the Azerbaijani manat (AZN). Check the current exchange rate before travelling and keep some local currency available for small purchases where cards may not be accepted.

Things I Wish I Had Known Before Visiting Azerbaijan

Here are a few practical tips for first-time travellers:

  • Plan excursions carefully: Places outside Baku can involve long drives, so check travel times before booking tours.
  • Check the weather: Conditions in Baku can be windy, while mountain destinations may be considerably colder.
  • Choose your location wisely: Staying in or near central Baku can make sightseeing more convenient.
  • Check entry requirements: Indian passport holders should verify the latest Azerbaijan visa requirements through official channels before booking.
  • Carry comfortable shoes: Exploring the Old City and walking around sightseeing areas involves plenty of walking.
  • Keep your itinerary flexible: Weather, traffic and tour schedules can affect outdoor plans.

Would I Recommend Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan is a destination I would recommend to travellers who want a combination of architecture, culture, mountain scenery and experiences beyond the usual city break.

What makes it interesting is the variety. Baku gives you the urban experience, while destinations such as Quba and Shahdag allow you to discover a completely different side of the country. The Candy Cane Mountains add yet another landscape to the journey.

My biggest advice for first-time visitors is simple: do not limit your trip to Baku alone if you have the time and budget to explore further. Leave room for the unexpected, enjoy the journey between destinations and experience Azerbaijan at your own pace.

Sometimes, the best part of travelling is discovering places you knew very little about before you arrived. For me, Azerbaijan was one of those destinations.
