Things to Do in Edinburgh in 1 Day

Edinburgh is one of those cities where you can walk around for hours and still feel like you have discovered something new. From its dramatic castle and medieval Old Town to colourful streets, mysterious closes and beautiful viewpoints, there is a lot to explore.

But what if you have only 1 day in Edinburgh?

Don’t worry. You can still experience the city’s biggest attractions, explore its fascinating history, eat some Scottish food and catch beautiful views without rushing through every attraction.

Here is a simple Edinburgh 1-day itinerary that covers the best of the city.

1. Start Your Day at Edinburgh Castle

Begin your day at Edinburgh Castle, one of Scotland’s most famous landmarks.

Perched dramatically on Castle Rock, the castle offers incredible views over Edinburgh. Inside, you can explore the Great Hall, Crown Jewels, historic rooms and exhibitions.

Try to reach early in the morning because the castle can get busy, especially during peak tourist season.

Give yourself around 1.5 to 2 hours here if you want to explore it properly.

2. Walk Down the Royal Mile

After Edinburgh Castle, start walking down the Royal Mile.

This historic street connects Edinburgh Castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse and is one of the best places to experience the atmosphere of Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Look out for the tiny alleyways known as closes. Some of them are incredibly narrow and have fascinating stories attached to them.

You will also find Scottish souvenir shops, cafés, pubs, street performers and historic buildings along the way.

Don’t rush this walk. The Royal Mile is as much about the atmosphere as it is about sightseeing.

3. Visit the Writers’ Museum

If you enjoy literature, make a quick stop at the Writers’ Museum.

The museum celebrates some of Scotland’s most famous writers, including Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson.

It is relatively small, so it works well when you have only one day in Edinburgh.

Even if you aren’t a huge book lover, the historic building itself is worth seeing.

4. Explore Colourful Victoria Street

Next, make your way to Victoria Street, one of Edinburgh’s most photogenic streets.

The curved street is lined with colourful buildings, independent shops, cafés and restaurants.

It has a completely different feel from the grand architecture around the Royal Mile and is a lovely place to wander around.

If you are looking for Instagram-worthy spots in Edinburgh, don’t skip this one.

5. Stop for a Scottish Lunch

By now, you will probably be ready for lunch.

Edinburgh has everything from modern restaurants to traditional pubs, so you have plenty of options.

If you want to try Scottish food, look for:

  • Haggis
  • Scotch pie
  • Cullen skink
  • Scottish salmon
  • Fish and chips
  • Neeps and tatties

And if you have never tried haggis before, this is a good opportunity. You can always order a small portion before deciding whether it is your thing.

6. Explore Edinburgh’s Witchy and Dark History

One of the most fascinating things to explore in Edinburgh is its darker history.

The city has centuries of stories involving witch trials, executions, graveyards, body snatching and alleged hauntings.

Walk around Greyfriars Kirkyard or consider joining a historical walking tour that focuses on Edinburgh’s darker past.

You will notice that the city feels completely different once you know some of the stories behind its old streets and buildings.

For anyone interested in witchcraft, folklore or the supernatural, this can easily become one of the highlights of the day.

7. See Greyfriars Bobby

While you are around Greyfriars, don’t miss the famous statue of Greyfriars Bobby.

The little dog is one of Edinburgh’s most beloved figures and is associated with the story of a loyal dog who reportedly remained near his owner’s grave for years.

It is a quick stop, so you don’t need to allocate much time here.

8. Spend Some Time at Grassmarket

From Greyfriars, walk towards Grassmarket, a historic area located below Edinburgh Castle.

The area is filled with pubs, restaurants, cafés and independent shops.

It is a great place to stop for coffee or simply sit for a while and watch the city go by.

The view back towards Edinburgh Castle from Grassmarket is also beautiful.

9. Watch the Sunset from Calton Hill

End your sightseeing day at Calton Hill.

The climb is relatively easy compared with some of Edinburgh’s other viewpoints, and you get beautiful panoramic views across the city.

From the top, you can see Edinburgh’s Old Town, Edinburgh Castle, Arthur’s Seat and the surrounding landscape.

If the weather is clear, try to reach before sunset.

It is one of the best ways to end 1 day in Edinburgh.

10. Experience Edinburgh After Dark

If you still have energy after sunset, don’t immediately head back to your hotel.

Edinburgh’s Old Town becomes especially atmospheric after dark.

You can take an evening walk through the narrow closes, visit a traditional pub or join a ghost and dark-history tour.

The combination of old stone buildings, winding lanes and centuries-old stories makes Edinburgh particularly atmospheric at night.

What to Eat During Your One Day in Edinburgh

Since you have only one day, make your meals part of the sightseeing experience.

Try a Full Scottish Breakfast if you start early, followed by a traditional Scottish lunch or dinner.

For something sweet, look for Scottish shortbread, tablet or cranachan.

And if you are visiting Edinburgh during colder weather, a warm bowl of soup in a cosy café or pub can be exactly what you need after walking around the Old Town.

A Few Tips for Exploring Edinburgh in One Day

Wear comfortable shoes. Edinburgh has cobbled streets, stairs, slopes and plenty of walking.

Start early, particularly if Edinburgh Castle is on your list.

Don’t overpack your itinerary. The beauty of Edinburgh is in the little streets, closes and unexpected viewpoints you discover while walking.

If you are visiting in winter, remember that daylight hours are much shorter, so plan your outdoor sightseeing accordingly.

And always keep some flexibility for the weather. Edinburgh can go from sunshine to rain surprisingly quickly.

If you have only 1 day in Edinburgh, focus on the Old Town and its surroundings rather than trying to cover the entire city.

Start with Edinburgh Castle, walk down the Royal Mile, explore Victoria Street, discover the city’s dark and witchy history around Greyfriars, relax at Grassmarket and finish with sunset views from Calton Hill.

You may not see every corner of Edinburgh in one day, but you will get a wonderful taste of what makes the city so special.

And honestly, Edinburgh is the kind of city where getting slightly lost in its old streets can be just as memorable as following the itinerary.
